FATE | Max for Live device

FATE is a simple Max for Live device that allows you to choose the fate of incoming midi notes allowing you to add musical randomness into your compositions.

FATE has two modes:

  • In the default mode, it acts as a simple probability device allowing a percentage of notes to pass through.
  • In pitch mode, a percentage of notes will be randomly transposed by the amount set with the transpose control.

There are many potential use cases for FATE and it can be a useful building block in more complex chains to produce satisfying musical results.

Here are a few ideas to use FATE -

  • Place FATE after an arpeggiator, set to pitch mode +12 ST. This will transpose certain notes by an octave at random adding variation to your arpeggio.
  • Use FATE in pitch mode before a quantizer (such as Ableton’s ‘Scale’ device), and set the pitch to +7 ST, now some notes will be transposed by a 5th interval (within the chosen key set by the quantizer)
  • Use FATE on trap-style hi-hat rolls to create random variations each time the roll is repeated. Both modes can be useful here.
  • Multiple FATE devices can be used in series for extra complexity. For example, set two FATEs into pitch mode, both set to transpose up an octave. Notes will be randomly transposed up an octave and occasionally two octaves.
  • Try duplicating a synth sound each with an arpeggiator and FATE. Panned these left and right and have FATE omit random notes creating an interesting stereo effect.
